The Mai-Tei or Mei-Tai baby carrier is a Chinese inspired carrier with or without padding. The feeling of wearing your baby or toddler is close to that of using a sling, while enjoying the comfort of a baby carrier that is less bulky. The design is as simple as can be with a broad seat and four straps to tie around your body.
Our Mai-Tei carriers are either made of sturdy Indian khadi cotton, available in plain colors or reversible, while a lighter model combines batik motives with a plain south cotton lining. The latter model has a slightly different shaped seat with a middle fold that adjusts to your child’s size and has padding around the seat, which can be an advantage for very sensitive skin. Both models are washable and come with wearing instructions.
Wearing instructions
Tie the two lower straps securely around your waist with the seat dangling down in front of you. Holding your child in front of you, bring up the seat behind your child’s back and while holding on to your child bring the upper two straps over your shoulders. Cross the shoulder straps behind your back and bring them around to the front of your body. Then tie them securely, either under your child’s legs and bottom, or behind your child’s back (some tie the straps over the child’s legs and then under their bottom, but I feel this might restrict the blood circulation in the child’s legs and hence it should be avoided.).
The alternative back wearing position necessitates (more) practice – for safe ways to tie the baby carrier in this position, please write to M-Wear.
Depending on your choice of material, the Mai-Tei baby carriers start at 30 €.
